SJSU Judo Recap: Summer & Fall Semesters
As we approach winter break, let’s look back at the eventful summer and fall season the San Jose State University Judo team had.
2025 USA Judo Junior Olympic Championships | Bedford Park, IL, USA

SJSU Judo started summer off strong with our junior(U21) team competing in the 2025 Judo Junior Olympics, a competition that serves as the individual trials for the 2025 Junior World Championships.
Four SJSU athletes took home medals in the Junior divisions:
Aaron Jen(-73kg): 2nd
Iya Sadanchikova(-48kg): 2nd
Jaxon Condella(-90kg): 3rd
Melia Manning(-48kg): 3rd
Aaron Jen (-73kg, Sophomore) and Iya Sadanchikova(-48kg, Freshmen) fell short in the final but still earned the respective title of Junior World Team Member 1st Alternative.
Japan Team Training Camp | Tokyo, Japan
July 2, 2025 - July 18, 2025
Following the USA Judo Junior Olympic Championships, our senior team began preparation for the FISU World University Games 2025 with a two-week training camp in Japan led by coach Kosuke Tanaka.
Jaxon Condella and Aaron Jen trained with the men’s team at Toin University of Yokohama, while Nancy Nguyen and Becky Hoang trained with the women’s team at Kokushikan University.

FISU World University Games 2025 | Rhine-Ruhr, Germany
July 23, 2025 - July 26, 2025
After wrapping up our team training camp in Japan, our World University Games team continued to Rhine-Ruhr, Germany to take on top-ranked athletes from around the world. Competition was tough and our members fell short.

Germany Team Training Camp | Munich, Germany
July 28, 2025 - Aug. 3, 2025
Concluding an intensive training camp in Japan and competition in Germany, five SJSU Judo team members, including Katie Gomez, Nancy Nguyen, Aaron Jen, Jaxon Condella, and Quin Kiel, participated in our very own germany training camp led by coach Toni Lettner and Mike Swain.
Qingdao Grand Prix 2025 | Qingdao, China
Sept. 26, 2025 - Sept. 28, 2025
As our team members rest and recover from an eventful and tough summer, our newest transfer student, Steven Boldbaatar(-73kg), takes on the Qingdao Grand Prix.
Boldbaatar threw Kodzhakov of Bahrain with Ko-soto to win his opening round, but lost in his second round against Masudi of Tajikistan who went on to win 5th at the event. Boldbaatar ends with a 1-1 record.

Following the week after Boldbaatar’s strong Grand Prix debut, the SJSU team competed in the San Jose Open–an event hosted and run by SJSU Alum, Chuck Jefferson.

2025 World Judo Juniors Championships | Lima, Peru

In that same weekend, Sophomore Iya Sadanchikova(-48kg) competed at the World Junior Championships under the “wild card” status.
Sadanchikova won her opening round within the first minute by pinning Kenya’s Imase Rael, but lost in her second round against Nederland’s Wandel Vera who went on to win 5th at the event.
Zagreb Grand Prix 2025 | Zagreb, Croatia
Nov. 14, 2025 - Nov 16, 2025
Junior Steven Boldbaatar(-73kg) and Senior Nancy Nguyen(-70kg) started November off strong by competing in the Zagreb Grand Prix.
Unfortunately, Steven and Nancy fell short and were both eliminated in the round of 32.
Montreal Panamerican Open 2025 | Montreal, Canada
Nov. 15, 2025 - Nov 16, 2025
In the same weekend that Steven and Nancy were in Zagreb, Croatia, freshman Trent Tono(-60kg) battled it out at the Montreal Panamerican Open.
Trent went 2-2 for an overall 5th place finish.

SJSU Judo ends off an eventful November with two back-to-back national events, Dallas Open and USA Judo President’s Cup in Dallas, Texas.
