All team members qualified by competing and medaling at the 2022 National Collegiate Judo Association Championships. The NCJA usually provides some funding to the WUG team, but it did not host any events in 2020 and 2021, so the budget is minimal. The money raised will help cover the World University Games fees and airfare.
The Universiade, also known as the World University Games, is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Universiade is staged every two years in a different city worldwide, representing both winter and summer competitions and is second only in importance to the Olympic Games. The judo competition dates are June 29 – July 2. The team will arrive in Chengdu on June 25.
